Inside Looking Out!

7:30pm, Hot Springs Fieldhouse, $15

Conducting Master Class and Reading… with a twist!

  • Mendelssohn: Hebrides Overture (Carlos Espinosa, Assistant Conductor – coached by Peter Bay)
  • Mahler: Symphony No. 1 – select movements (conducted by Peter Bay)

This special event will feature the Festival Orchestra spread out on the floor of the Hot Springs Fieldhouse with audience seating IN THE ORCHESTRA.

The first half of the program features Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture conducted by the Festival Orchestra’s Assistant Conductor Carlos Espinosa as he is mentored by our Music Advisor Peter Bay of the Austin Symphony Orchestra. From the audience’s unique vantage point inside the orchestra, they will be able to see precisely the gestures, facial expressions and ideas communicated by the conductor and experience up-close-and-personally the effects they have on the musicians.

Intermission between halves will be an experience of its own as the audience and musicians alike take a break on the floor of the Field House, interact, and build relationships that will last the entire Festival and beyond.

Maestro Peter Bay will take the podium for the second half of the program and lead the full Festival Orchestra in its first reading of excerpts from Mahler’s Symphony No. 1. This monumental work is an experience of the highest order, and this opportunity to sit inside the orchestra is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience for all but the luckiest and most talented musicians of the world.

Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture will be performed again in concert on Wednesday 13 June, and Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 on the Festival’s finale concert Saturday 16 June.
